Sun Sui Wah

This was awhile back, but when my family came to visit me, we went to Sun Sui Wah - a really interesting Chinese restaurant. It didn't look over the top fancy but it definitely wasn't a dingy Chinese restaurant. I checked out the menu online before we went and it looked intriguing! It had a bunch of random dishes that you don't regularly see but always hear about:  bird's nest soup, squab (pigeon!), Alaskan King crab, and the controversial shark fin soup.

We drove by while trying to find parking and we saw a bunch of people protesting the restaurant because of the shark fin soup that is available at the restaurant. I'm not sure if I feel bad supporting a restaurant that provides shark fin - but it is a very popular Chinese restaurant and they have the Alaskan King crab!!

We had the squab as our "appetizer."

It was so delicious!! It was pure dark meat - so moist and the skin was so flavourful. Being in the food industry, you'd think I knew it was pigeon meat... but I didn't! I didn't realize this until two weeks after when I met up with Kevin's parents and they were talking about pigeon meat. I said I never had pigeon meat and mid-sentence Kevin informed me pigeon is squab. Oh. Delicious!

We then went for the Alaskan King crab feast for the whole family. Our server informed us that it was more than enough for the four of us.

The crab was tossed in the saltiest diced garlic. It was SO good. I wish I took a picture of the live crab itself - the waiter actually brought the crab over to our table for our approval. I was too shy. Or too surprised. Towards the end, I just ended up eating just the garlic itself - it was so delicious. Definitely memorable.

The second crab dish was fried and supposedly spicy. Not as spicy as I often have my food - but definitely amazing. I just wanted to pop the whole thing in my mouth - but there is shell in there. I did it anyway.

The last dish of the Alaskan King crab feast. The crab was served in the shell with fried rice. The crab in the shell was amazingly creamy - I don't know what was in the creamy crab itself. A lot of fried rice underneath and around the shell. I actually started ketosis the day before - but it was so tempting and my family was visiting - I had to break it and start ketosis again when they left. How could I pass on this?

It was extremely filling. We actually could not finish everything and saved a bit from every course to bring home to Kevin.

I'd definitely go back. It was a very comfortable restaurant and I didn't feel like I was in some dim sum restaurant. The waiter was actually very attentive, considering it is a Chinese restaurant.
